Acknowledging Health Dysfunction in America

In the United States, over 60% of adults have a chronic disease—most of which are preventable. Despite spending twice as much per capita on healthcare as other developed nations, we have the lowest life expectancy among them. Families are torn apart by unexpected deaths, and countless individuals endure a lifetime of struggle managing chronic conditions that could have been avoided with better education and a preventative approach to health.
Take my cousin Chase, for example—a former professional baseball player and otherwise healthy man. At just 38 years old, he was diagnosed with colon cancer, a disease men aren’t even recommended to be screened for until age 45. His story isn’t unique. It’s a painful reminder that our current approach to health in the United States isn’t just insufficient—it’s doing irreparable damage.
The incentives in the medical industry are backwards and we are witnessing the consequences. It’s far more profitable to sell treatments than to cure or prevent disease in the first place. Ironically, we live in a time of unprecedented technological advancement. Devices like wearables and continuous monitors provide more health data than ever before. Yet, the mainstream medical industry remains reactive, expensive, and broken. It’s time for an entirely new approach.

Working Backwards from The Future

When we started Vital we did not set out to make something incrementally better. Instead, we asked ourselves: what is the future of health and how do we build towards it? All visionary companies were built this way. Instead of creating a CD with twice the storage, Steve Jobs invented the iPod. Instead of hiring more codebreakers, Alan Turing invented the computer. The best technology turns what was once considered impossible into an affordable commodity. And for those who can’t explain how it works, its indistinguishable from magic.
So, let’s be uncompromisingly ambitious and ask ourselves: What does the future of health look like? How do we not only prevent disease but optimize health—while reducing overhead and cost?

Establishing Assumptions

To accurately predict the future of health, we have to extrapolate eventualities based on current trends. Here’s what we believe:
  1. Human health will be solved (is deterministic)
    1. A deterministic system is one in which the inputs guarantee outputs, there is no randomness. If research continues to improve, we should be able to solve human health. Meaning, we should be able to know exactly how an intervention will affect a human based on their genetics and health status.
  1. AI will advance beyond any human
    1. Today, AI systems like ChatGPT occasionally make mistakes. But the trajectory is clear: as they become more capable the rate of error decreases. Assuming there is nothing fundamental problematic about the way AI works, there is a point in the near future where it will become infallible.
  1. We’ll measure everything without harm
    1. Recent advancements in medical devices like Neuralink and wearables like Apple Watch, we can gather an incredible amount of biological information with minimal risk. As we progress with biometric analysis, there is a point where everyone can have perfect and complete health data. We will have affordable, non-invasive data collection, offering a complete picture of health without gaps or guesswork.

Dreaming of the Impossible

Let’s assume our assumptions are true: human health is deterministic, AI will become infallible, and biomarkers will be measured continuously with zero error. What will our daily lives look like regarding health? Here are some ideas:
  1. Personalized guidance
    1. Generic health advice will be obsolete. Instead, AI will deliver hyper-personalized recommendations based on real-time evaluations of aggregated health data. It will be applying verified research to ensure interventions will produce measurable benefits.
  1. Predictable outcomes
    1. Algorithms will generate accurate predictions of future health outcomes based on personal history, daily habits, and trends. They will see all the warning signs and help us prevent illness long before symptoms appear.
  1. Personal empowerment
    1. There will be no need for trust. Every recommendation or prediction generated by AI will be evidence-based and verifiable by individuals. All the best knowledge and tools we need to optimize vitality will be at our fingertips exactly when we need them.

Bridging a Path Forward

If we are right about our assumptions and what the future of health looks like, how can we work towards making it a reality? This is the nuance of our invention:
  1. Aggregate data
    1. To provide the best and most accurate health recommendations and predictions, we have to provide AI with a complete and holistic view of health. That’s why we’re building a roadmap with over 150 trackable biometrics, ensuring that every critical aspect of health is accounted for—from inflammation and sleep to mental well-being.
  1. One comprehensive health score
    1. Every objective marker of health status contributes to your Total Vitality score on Vital. This unified metric ensures that users can track and optimize their overall health without trading off one aspect of well-being for another.
  1. Preventative monitoring
    1. We encourage users to measure every aspect of health preventatively, not just when they start experiencing symptoms of illness. Using wearables and getting biomarkers measured on a reasonable schedule is how we move the goal from achieving average health, to feeling incredible every day.
  1. Expansive knowledge base
    1. It’s time to ditch the news feeds and replace scattered advice with precision–providing information when it’s most relevant to you. Each health metric on Vital is paired with detailed information from various sources about what it measures and how to improve it.
  1. Safe experimentation
    1. Waiting for perfect answers from researchers isn’t an option. To accelerate progress, individuals need safe tools to experiment with their health and discover what works best for them. With Vital, users can test what resonates with them and make adjust based on real data.
